The ballasted superstructure still plays an important part in the German railway network today. For sleepers, as core components of this superstructure design, proof of suitability is required. However, appropriate standardised methods exist only for concrete sleepers. Therefore, a material-independent procedure for the calculation of sleeper stresses was developed and integrated in a concept to determine requirements. Additionally, a general process for the proof of suitability of sleepers is conceived.
