Surface deflections are unintended depressions on an outer panel that disturb the visual appearance of a sheet metal part. This thesis presents a so far missing systematic study of the detection methods and their experimental validation. Additionally, the reasons for the occurrence of surface deflections are analyzed through an investigation of the part geometry’s effect. In conclusion, rules to avoid surface deflections by small geometrical changes of the part are presented and applied to outer panels.
