Abstract:
Different fish species (Danio rerio, Menidia beryllina and Hypomesus transpacificus) were used as models to investigate effects of abiotic (chemical compounds: PCB 95 and bifenthrin) or biotic stressors (ciliate parasite: Ichthyophthirius multifiliis), by measurement of transcriptomic changes in well-conserved signaling mechanisms. Additionally, a number of behavioral experiments were conducted to assess bifenthrin-induced effects on different levels of biological organization. The methods presented in this thesis have the potential to extend and complement current screening methods in neurotoxicological, ecotoxicological and environmental risk assessments.
