When lithium-ion cells are fast-charged, a side reaction can occur, which shortens their lifetime and increases their safety risk. In this dissertation, experimental methods for the detection of lithium plating and lithium stripping are developed based on electrochemical measurement methods and neutron diffraction. Furthermore, a physicochemical model for lithium plating and lithium stripping is developed corresponding with the experimental results. Finally, a charging procedure is simulated that excludes lithium plating by controlling the anode potential and simultaneously reduces the charging time.
