Bacterial alginates with different monomer ratios for intercalation into Zn2Al host structures were produced by enzymatic epimerization and characterized in this thesis. Based on the examination of the welan synthesis cluster, an alteration of the known Welan structure was further pursued by genetic engineering of Sphingomonas sp. ATCC 31555 and yielded new variants with modified monomer compositions. An increased amount of galactose showed clear indications for the synthesis of a second exopolysaccharide in this strain.
