Extracts of St. John´s wort (
Hypericum perforatum L.) are used in the treatment of depressions. The agronomic characteristics of 139 accessions were studied in four field experiments and their content of pharmacologically relevant compounds was analysed using an optimized HPLC method. The results showed a high variability in agronomic as well as in pharmacological traits. The pharmacological drug quality is greatly affected by harvest date. Taking into account the breeding limitations due to apomixis, a selection scheme has been developed involving both agronomic and pharmacological selection criteria. Finally, accessions of special interest owing to their high agronomic and pharmacological potential are described and perspectives for further breeding programes are outlined.
