This study is concerned with the floristic-ecological and socio-economic aspects of natural forest rehabilitation in the Central Loess Plateau of China. The study documents natural forest communities as well as degraded secondary steppe communities in a selected region and explores the correlation between plant communities and environmental site-factors. In addition, the study discusses the potential for forest rehabilitation in todays degraded areas and devises a guideline for implementing forest rehabilitation. The socio-economic analysis characterizes the study area as an area of subsistence agriculture with high poverty incidence. Important determinants of agricultural income are the availability of high quality farmland, precipitation and temperature regime, use of fertilizer and the reduction of farming on steep sloping farmland. The efficient allocation of labour for farming on productive lands potentially allows for the large-scale rehabilitation of forests of economically marginal lands.
