Within two consecutive years 92 populations were tested by microplots established as generalized lattices at several locations. One-way analysis of variance and principal component analysis elucidated variation of evaluation traits beeing important for forage use. Partial correlation coefficients exhibited relationships between evaluation traits and habitat characteristics. Cluster analyses uncovered a structure of the collection area, which was determinated by extraordinary combinations of habitat descriptors, the presence of produced cluster profiles, by counties producing superior populations and by microclimatical effects. They designated the core populations for maintaining ex situ. A method was developed to test freezing tolerance in a short period of time.
