Different from primary and secondary tasks tertiary tasks in cars are not directly connected with the driving task. Tertiary tasks contain all kinds of comfort, entertainment, and information systems. While designing tertiary tasks only little driver distraction has to be achieved. The present study proves that distraction by tertiary tasks can be prognosticated and reduced already during the development without costly experiments by using a system ergonomic analysis. Therefore nine tertiary tasks with a total of 36 different system ergonomically designed layouts are simulated in a car and tested in a field trial with 26 subjects. Periods of up to 16 seconds are measured in which the test person does not follow the call progress state. In general, tertiary tasks with according to system ergonomics bad designed layouts are significantly more distracting. Based on these findings nine rules are established for designing tertiary tasks, which can also be applied for software development.
