If fuel consumption and emissions are to be further reduced in passenger vehicles, then innovations are needed in bodywork lightweight structures. To this end, the work examines the use of non-reinforced thermoplastics in the outer panelling. Such innovations in materials technology trigger other innovations in turn, which make it difficult to reach a decision. Through the assessment and application of decision models, conclusions are drawn as to under what conditions the use of thermoplastics is appropriate from the technical and economic points of view in this application area. The parameters of relevance here include unit numbers, loading and assembly location.
