The dissertation contributes to the methodical development of open, enterprise-wide information systems. It includes the definition of a comprehensively integrated meta model, a complete set of description techniques, an enterprise-wide process model, and a three-tier tool concept based on the business object concept. This approach differs from related work in three key areas. First, the main result of the research is a systematic derivation of a methodical framework based on business process reengineering requirements. Second, the approach includes the seamless integration of workflows in the metamodel and in the description techniques. And, finally, it introduces a novel process model for the development of open, enterprise-wide systems based on business objects.
