The Glentleiten Open Air Museum of Upper Bavaria has a total of 200 chests, of which about 90 pieces are decorated using different painting techniques. The objective of this work is to provide an overview of the various painting techniques, by the examples of 17 selected chests from the museum collection.
These chests exhibit graphical or pictorial internal decors in different formats and divisions. Free patterns appear in different styles as well as the comb drawed painting, the circle stroke technique, the sprinkle technique, stencilling and the stamping technique. Furthermore one can find woodcut applicé or alleged „embossed stripe print“. Graining and marbling to imitate wood and stone are also present. There are a variety of floral and geometric motives but also gate tower motives, monograms
and initials, on bare wood, partly primed or completely opaque painted surfaces.
