The present Bachelor’s Thesis discusses the Catoptrum Microcosmicum by Johann Remmelin, first published in 1619, which is one of the earliest and most complex anatomical flap books. The book’s history, content and technique is elaborated based on six different editions available at the Bavarian State Library in Munich. First the history of anatomy, early anatomical images and the development of anatomical flap books are outlined. Then the Catoptrum Microcosmicum and its author are presented and the anatomical plates are described. A system of identification was developed to record all components used in the hinged figures. Based on this, the different issues are compared and commonalities and differences as well as common damages explained. In addition to that, the restoration and conservation measures carried out on two of the books are presented. Finally different approaches to digitising these books are discussed.
