Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit thematisiert die Erhaltung von Videoinstallationen und die damit verbundene Gefahr einer Veränderlichkeit dieser elektronischen Kunstwerke. Anhand der Videoinstallationen One Candle von Nam June Paik und The Stopping Mind von Bill Viola, beide in Besitz des Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, wird die Notwendigkeit der dokumentarischen Erfassung elektronischer Kunstwerke für deren Bewahrung aufgezeigt. Es wird erläutert wie und in welcher Form elektronische Komponenten erfasst werden können. Im Vordergrund der technischen Betrachtung stehen die Erhaltungsmöglichkeiten von Dreiröhrenprojektoren und die Regenerierbarkeit von Kathodenstrahlröhren die bei beiden Videoinstallationen verwendet werden. Für beide Kunstwerke wurde ein Erhaltungskonzept erstellt, das die Pflege und Wartung der technischen Komponenten beschreibt. Außerdem wurden die Möglichkeiten von Emulation und Migration als eine der möglichen Erhaltungsstrategien in Erwägung gezogen und deren Vor- und Nachteile diskutiert. Die Funktionsweise und Abspielbarkeit von Informationsträgern wurde für Magnetbänder, Bildplatten und computertechnische Komponenten zusammengestellt.     «

The following thesis deals with the preservation of video-installations and the entail risk in consequences of the variability for these electronic artworks. The necessity to document electronic artworks is essential for their preservation. This importance is shown on the basis of two video-installations One Candle by Nam June Paik and The Stopping Mind by Bill Viola, both part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt. It is pointed out how and in which form electronic equipment can be described and documented. The points of view of the technical consideration are the preservation strategy for cathode ray tube projectors and the regenerative powers of single cathode ray tubes, which are part of both video-installations. A preservation strategy based on the documentation is prepared for both artworks. It includes the recommendation of care and maintenance for the technical components. With focus on the long term preservation strategies, the possibilities of migration and emulation are discussed with their advantages and disadvantages. The functionality and playback skills for data devices are summarized for magnetic tapes, laser disks and computer technical components.     «
