The following thesis deals with the preservation of video-installations and the entail risk in consequences of the variability for these electronic artworks. The necessity to document electronic artworks is essential for their preservation. This importance is shown on the basis of two video-installations One Candle by Nam June Paik and The Stopping Mind by Bill Viola, both part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt. It is pointed out how and in which form electronic equipment can be described and documented. The points of view of the technical consideration are the preservation strategy for cathode ray tube projectors and the regenerative powers of single cathode ray tubes, which are part of both video-installations. A preservation strategy based on the documentation is prepared for both artworks. It includes the recommendation of care and maintenance for the technical components. With focus on the long term preservation strategies, the possibilities of migration and emulation are discussed with their advantages and disadvantages. The functionality and playback skills for data devices are summarized for magnetic tapes, laser disks and computer technical components.
