The coffered ceiling of the Banquet hall of Ortenburg Castle nearby Passau in Bavaria, calls for immediate preservative measures, as many of its decorative parts are coming off. One of the main reasons for this has to be seen in the general static instability of the woodwork above, unto which the construction of the ceiling is attached. In order to prepare refurbishing measures, the woodwork of the roof was measured by additional experts. Exact measurements were made of the deformations that occurred over the centuries. The author of this study strives to give an exact account of the historically significant design of the ceiling, thereby applying contemporary building research methods and other methods used in the field of art restoring. Detailed drawings and a photogrammetric survey were made, demonstrating the complex structure of the ceiling, as well as the current state of the deformations that go with the alarming state of the woodwork. At the same time the study offers some more details concerning the building history of the castle, using sources hitherto ignored. Its main concern is to present a contribution to the construction history of renaissance interiors.
