The collection of the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum contains three small Japanese cabinets and an accompanying cover box (from the end of 17th century). All those objects belong to the small group of Japanese "white lacquers." These four pieces were probably collected around 1700 by Duke Anton Ulrich. The historic inventory (after 1765) describes the pieces for the first time.
The history of the Brunswick Lacquer Collection is briefly described and the relevant publications on Japanese "white lacquers" are discussed. The thesis mainly focuses on the technological analysis of this rare group of Japanese export wares. This approach was mainly chosen because the origin of the “white lacquers” was not clear. Furthermore, European publications have used the term "white lacquer" for varying Japanese technologies. The thesis succeeds in proving the Japanese origin and in clarifying the art technology as far as possible.
