This paper presents an approach for single tree detection in millimeterwave SAR intensity data. Due to the low canopy penetration of millimeterwave SAR trees are imaged with a high level of detail. Nevertheless, the appearance of trees in the image is manifold and rather nondescript which imposes some challenges to automatic detection schemes. Starting with an explanation of the appearance of trees in SAR data it is shown how models can help to understand the imaging process of trees and their properties. Then a new approach is presented to detect single trees, based on the insights of the previous discussion.     «
