The Department of Dermatology and Allergy Biederstein of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) was opened in 1969 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2019. The origins of this clinic can be traced back to older care structures, as in many places. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, this article is intended to illustrate the development and current orientation of the clinic and to express our appreciation for our predecessors, who have worked for our patients in various positions and thus created the basis for a successful clinic in health care, research and teaching. The Department of Dermatology and Allergy Biederstein belongs to the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar (on the right side of the Isar) of the Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM), although it is located on the left side of the Isar, in the beautiful Schwabing not far from the English Garden. It is one of three dermatology clinics in Munich that regularly hold advanced training courses within the framework of the Munich Dermatological Society (MDG e. V.). The MDG 2019 at Biederstein will be dedicated to the anniversary of this clinic as well as to advanced training.
As a university institution the clinic covers the field medical care with 74 beds on 4 wards, the outpatient clinic with a large polyclinic for general and private patients (approx. 60 000 patient visits per year), the research field with various research groups and large laboratories and the field of teaching, further education and advanced training. Allergology has already been a focus of clinical care and research when the clinic was opened in 1969. Further focuses are inflammatory skin diseases, dermato-oncology, dermato-infectiology, dermato-surgery and wound care. The clinic is part of the Comprehensive Allergy Center of the Technical University Munich (ACTUM) and EU center of excellence for allergy as well as part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Munich of the Technical University Munich (CCC Munchen(TUM)) and the Comprehensive Cancer Center Munich (CCCM). Each semester about 450 students are supervised within the framework of lectures, seminars and internships. In addition to congresses such as the annual conference of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Dermatologische Forschung (ADF) in 2019 or the European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR) in 2016, the clinic and the chair organize regular advanced training events in the context of the Biedersteiner Symposium, the Biedersteiner Colloquium and the MDG.
