In this thesis, a spectroscopic gas sensor operating in the mid-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum was developed. The sensor contains a novel 2D photonic crystal structure consisting of silicon microtube arrays. These photonic crystals exhibit strong transmittance over a wide spectral range in the mid-infrared, due to the high aspect ratios of the microtubes. Slow light effects in the photonic crystals are used to strongly enhance the absorption of the propagating light by gas molecules.
