Substitution effects of Al, Zn, and Ga in the host structure of ternary alkali metal type-I Si clathrates, of Zn and Tl in Sn clathrates as well as the size effect of the alkali-metal guest atoms are presented. The structures, atom ordering and physical properties of the synthesized clathrates are investigated in terms of X-ray and neutron diffraction methods, NMR spectroscopy and transport property measurements. Substituting effects of Li versus Mg, Al and Zn in Li15Si4 silicide leads to a significant increase of the thermodynamic stability of the binary phase. Zn versus Li substitution in Li17Si4 is studied as well.
