In this thesis, the applicability of Value Stream Mapping (VSM) for Lean implementation in complex chemical production environments is analysed, revealing several shortcomings of the method. Based on these findings, a VSM approach enhanced with Discrete Event Simulation (DES) is elaborated, compensating the shortcomings and capable of predicting feasibility and benefit of proposed VSM future states. In addition, the applicability of DES for modelling and optimizing chemical production processes is explored.
