Starting from the dinuclear compound [Mo
2(NCCH
3)
10][BF
4]
4 coordination compounds, such as molecular dimers, triangles and squares, are synthesized by the reaction with dicarboxylates. These compounds may serve, as a consequence of the remaining weakly bound solvent molecules, as potential building units for the controlled synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The required reactivity of these compounds towards further substitution reactions is proved by the help of bisphosphines. Characterization of the obtained products is done by means of NMR-, IR-, UV-Vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, TG-MS measurements and single crystal X-ray diffraction.
