Constitutional thinness (CT) is a phenotype of human leanness and resistance to weight gain. CT adipose tissue expresses less SULT1A1, an enzyme involved in the transfer of sulfur with no known function in adipose tissue. To determine the contribution of SULT1A1 to the CT phenotype, Sult1a1 knockout (KO) mice were characterized. Sult1a1 KO mice have a low body weight, are resistant to weight gain and have increased white adipose tissue browning demonstrating a novel role for Sult1a1 in adipose tissue. Sult1a1 KO mice mirror features of the CT phenotype linking SULT1A1 to human leanness.
