Fully automated driving in urban traffic is currently one of the key research topics in vehicle and traffic engineering, the development and approval of which are still major challenges. This dissertation is dedicated to the problem of situation recognition and interpretation, the development of a knowledge base of traffic rules and hazards, and the decision making for driving behavior in urban traffic that is compliant with the rules and considers the hazards. The developed methodology allows assigning relevant traffic rules and potential conflicts to each situation from real driving data. Based on this knowledge, appropriate maneuvers are derived and the criticality of driving situations is evaluated.
