Within the scope of this thesis, the influence of water contamination in gear lubricants on the tooth flank fatigue life and on the flank load carrying capacity, but predominantly on the pitting load carrying capacity of case-carburized gears, is investigated. Therefore, a quantitative determination of water-induced flank load carrying capacity losses in various commercially available gear lubricants and lubricant-related threshold values are presented. Furthermore, basic damaging mechanisms are derived and merged in an extended damaging model. Additionally, a review of the absolute water content as a suitable characteristic to evaluate measured water contents is given.
