Within the scope of this thesis systematical investigations were carried out on the load carrying capacity of carbonitrided spiral bevel and hypoid gears. The results show that by using the carbonitriding process instead of normal case hardening, a higher load carrying capacity regarding pitting can be achieved. That is without compromising the tooth root load carrying capacity. Furthermore, the results indicate a slightly higher risk of scuffing on the carbonitrided compared to case hardened gears, which can be compensated by using appropriate oil additives.
