Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Accessible and effective treatment options are needed to manage obesity and its comorbidities. Commercial weight loss (WL) programs are a potential solution to the lack of available treatment, providing greater access at a lower cost than clinic-based approaches. However, few commercial programs have been rigorously evaluated. We assessed the effectiveness of the commercial Mrs.Sporty WL program and tested the program’s claim of “8 kg WL in 8 weeks”. METHODS: Sixteen women (age: 50.0±10.9 years; BMI: 30.3±5.1 kg/m2) participated in the 8-week Mrs.Sporty WL program (“Kilos-Weg-Camp”) at the studio in Dachau (Germany). The program consisted of an exercise and nutrition component and included weekly social events to review nutrition materials and foster group spirit. The exercise component included 3 functional strength endurance classes and 1 cardio class (all circuit-style body weight exercises, 32 minutes per class) per week. The nutrition component was based on the food pyramid and tailored to individual energy requirements, aiming to induce 0.5–1.0 kg WL per week. RESULTS: On average, participants lost 5.9 kg (95% CI: 4.9, 6.8; p<0.001) or 6.9% (95% CI: 5.9, 7.9; p<0.001) of weight. WL was significantly less (−2.1 kg [95% CI: −3.1, −1.2; p<0.001]) than the expected 8 kg. Fat-free mass (via bioimpedance) did not change (−0.4 kg [95% CI: −0.9, 0.1; p=0.10]). CONCLUSION: Despite failing to meet the expected 8 kg WL in 8 weeks, the commercial Mrs.Sporty WL program induced clinically significant (≥5%) WL over 8 weeks while preserving fat-free mass, proving an effective obesity treatment option.
