Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an innovative biomass upgrading method, which resembles natural coalification. In this doctoral thesis, the process parameters of HTC are optimized for subsequent gasification. Laboratory scale experiments show the impact of process parameters on substantial fuel characteristics, on the reduction of corrosion and fouling potential and on gasification kinetics of the hydorchars. From this data, an optimum regarding process efficiency is derived and a scale-up of the results to pilot scale is investigated.
