A New Traffic-Calming Device : Speed Kidney

The speed kidney is composed of a main speed hump and a complementary speed hump disposed on the same cross-section. If passenger car drivers adopt a straight path, they would ride the speed kidney with one or two wheels over the main speed hump, the same as a usual speed cushion or speed table. Consequently, drivers could modify their path, adapting it to the curvature of the main speed hump to avoid both vertical discomfort and mechanical damage. The optimal path of a passenger car would be curved, as a chicane or slight zigzag. The modified line could be composed of a single curve or three circular curves, as a reverse curve. In any case, the central curve and the speed kidney are concentric, with the radius depending on the speed kidney radius. On-street parking must be prohibited on both sides of the speed kidney to allow drivers to safely perform a curved path.     «
