Emil J. Gumbel (* July 18, 1891, Munich, † September 10, 1966, New York) was a German mathematician of Jewish descent and an active political writer, whose pacifist conviction
during predominantly right-wing, war enthusiastic times during the Weimar Republic led to severe disruptions of his life and academic career. As a consequence, Gumbel and his findings are almost forgotten today. In this thesis we give a comprehensive examination of Gumbel's work regarding multivariate analysis as an appreciation of his scientific contribution in the respective field. Several systems of bivariate distribution functions with fixed uniform, normal, exponential, logistic, and extreme margins are introduced, most of them by Gumbel, and thoroughly studied. Further, criteria to distinguish between these different systems are given. Eventually, some results of great relevance are emphasized.
