Tree bark is a naturally highly optimized material protecting a tree from various hazards. Its potentials are so far only negligibly used for technical applications. In this dissertation the basis for the efficient use of tree bark as a thermal insulation material is laid. Panels were pressed and optimized with regard to mechanical, thermal, and ecological properties. The interior structure of the insulation panels was characterized and optimized.
Finally, the thermal performance of the panels was modeled in order to enable theoretical material optimization.
