We used cryo-electron tomography to visualize and characterize the morphology and content of distal axonal processes in developing neurons. In addition we analyzed synaptic vesicles, their distribution and interconnectivity in a quantitative matter. In two additional studies in synaptosomes we used mice of different genotypes to investigate the influence of human alpha-Synuclein on the synaptic ultrastructure and to reveal a preferential localization of SynCAM I towards the edge of the synaptic cleft.
