We use effective field theories to study the interactions of heavy quarks in the vacuum and in medium. First, we show how boost transformations may be incorporated in a non-relativistic EFT through a nonlinear realization. We also study hybrid quarkonia, deriving a coupled Schrödinger equation for the hybrid masses through the use of EFT arguments. Finally, we study the behavior of heavy quarks in a hot medium by calculating the Polyakov loop at NNLO and the short-distance Polyakov loop correlator at NNNLO at finite temperature in the weak coupling expansion.
