In industries with evolutionarily established system architectures and stakeholder networks (as found e. g. in the context of industrial systems and plants), the possibilities for strategically planned customer neutral innovations are often limited to the further development of important modules. Due to its top-down ideal, systems engineering and its methods and approaches show significant deficits regarding the possibilities to take a module centered perspective, being indispensable for the mentioned problem. As a contribution to overcome this hurdle of transferability a methodology for the quality oriented planning and development of multifunctional core modules is presented.
