The enzymatic synthesis of bromo- and chlorocarbazoles, the density functional theory (DFT) modelling of likely products, their occurrence, distribution and dissipation in soil was investigated. Their photolysis in water and dioxin-like toxicity was also assessed. Bromo- and chlorocarbazoles were formed enzymatically in vitro with 3-mono, 3,6-di, 1,3,6-tri and 1,3,6,8-tetra substituted congeners predicted by DFT calculations as the stable products. Photolysis in water obeys first-order kinetics. They are ubiquitous, persistent and exhibit weak dioxin-like toxicity.
