The former parish church on the isle of Lindau is one of the oldest churches in the area of Lake Constance
and exhibits mural painting dating back to the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries.
This diploma thesis focuses on the late Gothic paintings on the north wall.
Twelve distinct areas illustrate the passion of Christ and an additional seven show scenes from the life of
the patron saint of the church, Saint Peter.
The uppermost part is the best preserved and shows the work of an experienced artist of the late Gothic
era.
The main body of this thesis contains a detailed appraisal of the mural painting, describing for every
image scene the subject matter, the colours used, as well as the preserved and damaged parts of the
painting. Besides the study of the historic painting itself, several analyses have been conducted in order
to gain additional insights into used materials and the formation of the damages.
