By analyzing different situations in design and development and by interpreting the processes resulting from these situations, requirements and specifications of process models are derived based on the five aspects planning, controlling, documentation, analysis and synthesis of processes. Subsequently, the most common methods being used in process modeling today, are analyzed and evaluated by showing their suitability for general modeling of design processes. This includes in particular the requirements introduced by the different purposes and goals of process modeling. Consolidating both development processes and methods for process modeling, a methodology is be defined which consists of criteria for the selection and combination of suitable methods for modeling a given situation in product development. Finally, possible use cases and modifications of existing methods are illustrated using actual case studies.
