Method Knowledge Transfer in Product Development via Stories from Student Design Projects

The transfer of method knowledge between design research and design practice in industry can be enhanced by web-based technologies such as the CiDaD method portal (Competence in Design and Development) created at the Institute for Product Development at the Technische Universität München (TUM). One shortcoming of such method portals tends to be the “theoretical” and abstract nature of the provided information. General method descriptions have to be adapted to the specific situation of the user in order to put design methods into practice. Experiences gained in the application of design methods are seen as valuable supplement to general contents. This paper presents an approach to analyze student design projects and extract project “stories” from them. These stories may enhance the understanding of methods and their effects, and increase their application in the context of design tasks and problems.     «
