The species
Ips typographus is an important element of natural forest ecosystems. By creating dead wood and forest gaps it facilitates fungal, insect and plant diversity. On the other hand, in mass outbreak situations it can cause dramatic damages in economically used forests. In this dissertation, the influence of host tree metabolites, population density and overwintering conditions on individual fitness and flight capacity was studied. It was shown that the studied traits and behaviour are extremely variable within populations and this species is characterised by a high plasticity.
