Students in engineering need to practice teamwork under “real” conditions, similar to those existing in industry. Therefore, the Department of Product Development at the Technische Universität München carries out a team seminar in collaboration with companies from industry. In this paper a conceptual design project is presented which was commissioned by Voith Marine Technology, a company with about 280 employees that produces ship’s propulsion system. Subject of the project was the advancement of the Voith-Schneider-Propeller, a combined system for propulsion and steering of towboats, ferries and many other applications. The conceptual design was part of a major project at Voith Marine Technology. This project was carried out by seven students, supervised by two assistant professors of the department and in collaboration with the responsible employees of Voith Marine Technology within a period of 3 months.
