This work investigates the impact of system architecture on quality and costs of electric-electronic systems in the automotive domain. In the course of this work a quality model for system architecture is derived from the life-cycle of E/E-systems. The related architecture model distinguishes the functional requirements, their logical realization and the physical resources of in-vehicle E/E systems. The quality goals, described as costs and risks in development, production, operation, service and evolution are related to structural properties of architecture. The investigation of relationships between architecture and quality goals is based on documented architecture cases and interviews with engineers involved in development and verification of E/E systems. The presented method of evaluation is validated on a number of actual architectural decisions.
