Within the project “Sowing in the Alps” the process of rejuvenation of spruces, firs, beeches and larches by means of sowing was examined in the Bavarian Alps on six south-facing slopes, which were circa 25° steep. Altogether, 1,300 places of sowing were laid out, distinguished between sowing in spring and sowing in autumn, with different treatment options (close by or far off a stump, place of sowing with a covering of brushwood, mineral soil and a layer of humus used as germinating bed). Only 3% of the seeds germinated, which shows a very low success of the sowing; sowing in the spring should be preferred to sowing in the autumn. One could note species-specific reactions on the different treatment options. The sowing in mineral soil close to a stump on a place covered with brushwood proves to be suitable for spruces and larches. The usage of humus as germinating bed should be preferred in relation to the nutritional value. One can state the same regarding the development of the roots.
