Emergency management of anaphylaxis Anaphylaxis, the acute allergic emergency, is the maximal manifestation of an immediate allergic reaction, which is generalized or systemic and may involve the whole organism. An insect sting or one peanut alone are able to elicit life-threatening reactions The therapeutic measures needed are carried out according to the history (elicitor, kinetics) and the clinical picture (symptoms/manifestations and severity) An algorithm for the therapy of anaphylaxis depending on the severity has recently been published in a guideline. Immediate disruption of the allergen contact, adequate positioning and fast introduction of medical treatment can save lives Adrenalin is indisputably the treatment of choice for severe or progressive anaphylaxis. More frequently, milder reactions are encountered, which may often be treated by surveillance, antihistamines and corticosteroids When children are treated, age- and weight-specific dosages have to be considered. Each patient with anaphylaxis in his/her history has to be sufficiently diagnosed allereologically and should be educated about behavioural patterns needed for prophylaxis and therapy of anaphylactic reactions The knowledge about symptoms, immediate therapy, possible complications and constant vigilance are the basis of a successful management of anaphylaxis
