Emil Julius Gumbel was a German (later French and US-American) mathematician who lived from 18 July 1891 to 10 September 1966. He taught and researched in the field of statistics and is considered one of the pioneers of extreme value theory. As a Jew, his life was influenced considerably by the political events of his time. His work against militarism and National Socialism was exemplary, and this matter is more current than ever. In this thesis Emil Gumbel is regarded as a teacher of mathematical statistics. Taking into account current academic findings, statistical teaching content from Gumbel’s lecture “Statistique Mathématique, Distributions” at the Institut de Science Financière et d’Assurances in Lyon is compared with a recent introductory course to stochastics at the Technical University of Munich. In addition to the appreciation of Gumbel’s teaching activities, this work aims to focus on the teaching of statistics for students, including its development and importance.
