Emil Julius Gumbel war ein deutscher (später französischer und US-Amerikanischer) Mathematiker, der von 18.07.1891 bis 10.09.1966 lebte. Er lehrte und forschte im Bereich der Statistik und gilt als einer der Pioniere der Extremwerttheorie. Als Jude wurde sein Leben stark durch die politischen Ereignisse seiner Zeit geprägt. Seine Arbeit gegen Militarismus und den Nationalsozialismus war vorbildlich, und diese Thematik ist aktueller denn je. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird Emil Gumbel als Lehrer der mathematischen Statistik betrachtet. Unter Einbezug aktueller fachdidaktischer Erkenntnisse werden statistische Lehrinhalte aus Gumbels Vorlesung „Statistique Mathématique, Distributions“ am Institut de Science Financière et d’Assurances in Lyon mit einer aktuellen Einführungsveranstaltung in die Stochastik an der Technischen Universität München verglichen. Mit dieser Arbeit soll neben der Würdigung der Lehrtätigkeit Gumbels auch die Lehre der Statistik für Studenten einschließlich ihrer Entwicklung und Bedeutung in den Fokus gerückt werden.      «

Emil Julius Gumbel was a German (later French and US-American) mathematician who lived from 18 July 1891 to 10 September 1966. He taught and researched in the field of statistics and is considered one of the pioneers of extreme value theory. As a Jew, his life was influenced considerably by the political events of his time. His work against militarism and National Socialism was exemplary, and this matter is more current than ever. In this thesis Emil Gumbel is regarded as a teacher of mathematical statistics. Taking into account current academic findings, statistical teaching content from Gumbel’s lecture “Statistique Mathématique, Distributions” at the Institut de Science Financière et d’Assurances in Lyon is compared with a recent introductory course to stochastics at the Technical University of Munich. In addition to the appreciation of Gumbel’s teaching activities, this work aims to focus on the teaching of statistics for students, including its development and importance.     «
