This paper examines the objectives and challenges in the construction project manage-ment of large-scale building projects and ways of further developing classic process models through agile and holistic elements. The starting point is the realization that tradi-tional, linearly organized models such as the waterfall principle are only able to meet the increasing demands of modern construction projects to a limited extent.
A three-stage approach was chosen to answer the research questions: First, a systemat-ic literature analysis was conducted to identify the central objectives and challenges of classic construction project management. Based on this, qualitative expert interviews were conducted with experienced practitioners from various roles in the construction in-dustry. The evaluation shows that the problem areas identified in the theoretical analysis, namely the “social/interactive,” “technical/content-related,” and “organizational/process-related” dimensions, are confirmed in practice.
Based on these findings, the second step was to derive the requirements for more holis-tic and agile construction project management from the challenges identified. In particu-lar, they emphasize the need for clear structures and responsibilities, greater resilience and adaptability, and improved cooperation between those involved. Building on this, twelve practical recommendations for action were developed in the third step, showing how classic waterfall-type process models can be supplemented with agile and integra-tive elements. These aim to make construction projects more agile and resilient to typical uncertainties and changes in construction projects.
The work thus contributes to the further development of construction project manage-ment in building construction and identifies starting points for future research, for exam-ple in relation to contract and remuneration structures and for construction execution in later performance phases.
