This thesis systematically examines procedural models in the construction industry and places them in the context of general project management approaches from other sectors. The aim is to identify which specific models are used in the German construction sector, how they differ from established procedural models in other disciplines, and how these models have evolved over time. The foundation of the thesis is based on two central research questions: First, which procedural models exist in other fields, and how do they differ from those in construction? Second, what current developments can be observed with regard to procedural models in the German construction industry, and what characteristics define them?
To answer these questions, a systematic literature review was conducted using relevant academic databases. This review was supplemented by a backward citation analysis to identify additional relevant primary sources. The selected literature was evaluated based on defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the general principles of project management are first explained, including definitions of projects and construction projects, as well as the classification of classical, agile, and hybrid project management approaches. Building on this, various procedural models are presented. The identified models are categorized according to their characteristics and assigned to the corresponding project management types, with explanations provided for the basis of each assignment. This categorization is also carried out for construction related models. Following this, the development of procedural models within the construction sector is discussed.This thesis contributes to the systematic documentation of existing procedural models in construction. It shows that there is a progression toward hybrid and agile methods within the industry.
