In this thesis, a general framework is developed to describe the heterogeneous soil microstructure and the consequent multimodal soil water characteristic curve (SWCC). The framework includes a probabilistic pore size distribution (PSD) model, an empirical SWCC model and a model to predict the SWCC from PSD data, which are validated with multimodal SWCC and PSD measurements from different soils. It provides new insights into the relationship between SWCC and PSD and can be incorporated into other unsaturated soil property formulations.
