African universities in the domain of land management play critical roles in postgraduate training and research in their different countries. However, most of them lack opportunities to learn from best practices around the world and often work in isolation from each other.By collaborating with Northern Universities (in executing education and research the collective generation of new insights, concepts, methodologies and educational background material) they can significantly improve and innovate their pursuit of solutions to local problems. This paper presents the “Advancing collaborative research in responsible and smart land management in and for Africa” (ADLAND) model of capacity development. ADLAND advances the concept and praxis of responsible and smart land management, in the context of, and for, being able to address the needs of African land policy. The paper discusses the ADLAND model and how its activities are planned and (will be) implemented towards roadmaps that will culminate into the development of a responsible and smart land management capacity in selected universities and research institutions in Africa. It presents its ADLAND methods for capacity development in land management education in Africa focusing on the responsible and smart land management concepts, the ADLAND networks and partnerships approach and its programme of activities.
