In the context of a high degree of complexity and product variety in the commercial vehicle industry, this dissertation investigates architecture planning and the application of virtual concept design methods for heavy-duty trucks in the early concept phase. The proposed concept of vehicle layouts focuses on the standardization of arrangement patterns of components in the vehicle as the primary driver of variance. As part of the implementation of the solution approach, an integrated concept development tool is proposed that supports the design of individual vehicle concepts towards a variant-optimized vehicle portfolio based on key performance indicators.
